A vital safety net for the homeless in Tampa just got stronger with the opening of a new free medical and dental clinic at The Drop. Located at 6220 North Nebraska Avenue, the community resource hub already offers essential services like showers, food, clothing, and mail access. Through a new partnership with the Pioneer Medical Foundation, the center is now expanding its reach to provide critical healthcare to those experiencing homelessness as well as uninsured and underinsured adults who face significant barriers to seeing a doctor.
The initiative relies heavily on the generosity of local specialists. Ano Kashumba, an advanced practice registered nurse and executive director of the Pioneer Medical Foundation, explained that the clinic is staffed by volunteers including dentists, hygienists, cardiologists, and surgeons who simply want to give back to their neighbors. This effort addresses a pressing local need, as U.S. Census Bureau data indicates that more than twelve percent of Tampa residents under sixty five lack health insurance.
For many involved in the project, the mission is deeply personal. Kathy, a volunteer at The Drop who once navigated homelessness herself, recalled how her own health plummeted when she lost her residence years ago. She described the arrival of these medical services as a true blessing for those currently struggling to survive on the streets. Similarly, Kashumba shared that having been without insurance herself in the past makes it her duty as a provider to ensure others receive necessary care regardless of their financial situation.
Since 2015, the Pioneer Medical Foundation has focused on providing medication assistance and outreach across Hillsborough and Pasco counties. During a recent ribbon cutting ceremony attended by community leaders and healthcare providers, Dr. S. Irfan Ali, president and CEO of Pioneer Medical Group, expressed his hope that integrating these services would amplify the center’s overall influence. He noted that while both The Drop and the homeless population often remain invisible to society, this small starting point has the potential to grow into something far more impactful for the city.
